Marie Jordaan died peacefully at Sunnybank Centre on 19th
She was born at Denholm, Saskatchewan on 3 December 1911. After losing both her parents during the Great Depression, Marie and her brother Maurice operated the family farm. In 1937, Marie travelled to Ottawa to take training as a Registered Nurse at the Ottawa Civic Hospital, graduating in June 1940. In November 1941 Marie joined the Canadian Army as a Lieutenant Nursing Sister. She was sent to the Commonwealth Hospital at Roberts Heights in Pretoria, South Africa. For her service during WW 2 she was awarded the Volunteer Service Medal, the Overseas Service Medal, and the Africa Star.
In 1947, Marie was repatriated to Halifax. She then travelled to Vancouver to return to Nursing as a civilian. Marie nursed at the Shaughnessy Veterans Affairs Hospital until her retirement in 1976.
Marie shared her life with a succession of beloved dogs for more than fifty years. After travelling through Europe, the USSR and the Middle East after retirement, Marie moved to Abbotsford, and then to Oliver B.C. in 1994.
Marie happily celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends on 3 December 2011. She was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion.
Left to mourn the loss of this caring and kind lady are her son Caesar and daughter-in-law Leona; her sister-in-law Loyola Van Der Haegen of North Battleford Sask; grand children and spouses: Michelle and Ed Gallagher (Stony Plain AB), Christiaan Jordaan and Camille Cam (Toronto), Nelson and Christie Jordaan (Vancouver); their children, many relatives and friends.
A funeral mass will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday August 31. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SPCA (1-800-665-1868 or www.spca.bc.ca/support/donate)
