The South Okanagan Victim Assistance Society (SOVAS) has recently received a grant of $3,500 from the Community Foundation of the South Okanagan ǀ Similkameen to improve office space for their victim services and counselling programs.
“It is crucial for individuals seeking services with us to feel welcome and respected. SOVAS wants to send this message to our clients as soon as they step into our office. Our waiting room is just so much more inviting with the new furniture and décor,” states SOVAS Acting Agency Coordinator, Christine Schwarz.
The grant went towards purchasing a larger seating area, an additional work station and office furniture to help our office run more efficiently and to create a more welcoming space. This grant contributes to fundraising efforts on the part of SOVAS, BC Gaming and our community partner the United Way. Victim assistance provides support services and counseling services to approximately 1,200 women and men per year who have experienced abuse and violence. In addition to client services, the organization is active in community fundraising, educational and awareness initiatives.
The Community Foundation of the South Okanagan ǀ Similkameen has served our region for over 20 years, working with donors to create legacies in the form of permanent endowment funds. Grants are distributed from income earned, preserving the capital to ensure a perpetual stream of funds.
