Nothin’ But Net basketball camp is only 10 days away, and this summer the SOSS gym will host its first UBC basketball presence in the history of the camp.
After accepting the full-time assistant job with the T-Birds in May, I decided that I would bring 2 of the top players in the country to Oliver. First is 6’5″ All-Canadian and All-Canada West star Doug Plumb, who has just signed a professional contract to play in Europe. Doug is an amazing player- one of the strongest combo guards around, and a great teacher of the game. Our second Thunderbird is 6’7″ forward Tommy Nixon, who will be one of our “go-to guys” this season. Tommy is an amazing athlete, a playground legend in Vancouver, and a favourite with UBC fans and kids. Both are very experienced at coaching youth basketball, and are in very high demand all around the province- most importantly, they are really great guys and great teachers of the game.
I’m extremely pleased to have these 2 players come to NBN this summer. Complimenting the UBC coaches this year will be Tyler Seth, one of the assistant coaches at Gonzaga University. The Bulldogs were the #1 seed in the NCAA tournament last season, and sport 2 Canadian National Team players. Tyler has worked closely with Kamloops native Kelly Olynyk, who was a Consensus All-American and the 13th overall pick in the 2013 NBA draft. Coach Seth brings a wealth of knowledge and coaching expertise to NBN as well as first hand knowledge of what it takes to get to the NBA. There are still some spots available, so get your registrations in quickly! The form can be downloaded from ODN by clicking on the NBN button or by going to our website www.nbnbasketball.com. BREAKING NEWS!! I have arranged an exhibition game to be played on Saturday, October 19th at SOSS Gym between the UBC Thunderbirds and the North Idaho College Cardinals. This will be the first time a Division 1 CIS school has ever played in Oliver, and should be a fantastic experience for everyone. I know both the Thunderbirds and the Cardinals are really excited about the experience. Both teams will be staying at the beautiful Walnut Beach Resort in Osoyoos, so we need to thank Don Brogan for providing us with incredible rates and extra long beds!!
SPOILER ALERT: the warmup for this game will be one of the best dunk shows anyone has ever seen in person – both of our teams are full of high-flying athletes ready to punish the rims in the new gym! This game will be advertised all over the valley, but I will ensure that Oliver residents will get first dibs on tickets. When they go on sale, I will follow with directions on how to purchase – this game will be sold out quickly, so act quickly. NBN campers will get free admission to the game, so get those registrations in today!
See you on the 15th! Spencer
