Summerland – Mayor Janice Perrino says her council is studying the possibility of expanding lower town trails south along the lake to Trout Creek and is funding a feasibility study. Directors thought the idea grand but will seek a comprehensive review of all trails (local and regional) and have a policy developed that covers the intent of a trails master plan.
Campbell Mtn Landfill: The RDOS will have a surplus of over a million dollars in its operational budget but not at Campbell Mountain Landfill. The dump with half a year gone has only gathered 32% of the needed revenue to pay the bills. It is the price of success in recycling with so many products are diverted from landfills.
Penticton – A motion to fund a Penticton Indian Band maintenance worker on the west side of the Channel Parkway was deferred for two more weeks as directors were divided as to how to proceed with a request for funding from the PIB. That request was for $14000 from Penticton and $14000 from the RDOS including Penticton’s 42% share of the regional pie.
Okanagan Falls: A public hearing will be held August 14th to review the OK Falls west Official community plan.
Apex – Meeting of concerned parties about logging at Apex has not happened but Area Director Tom Siddon says a new memorandum of agreement between the forest companies, the PIB and the Crown seems to address a number of concerns. PIB had agreed to a 30 day suspension of cutting timber to allow dialogue.
Hedley: Nasty words used around the RDOS table against Telus for interfering in a local survey being conducted by the area Director. Tom Siddon said it was unnecessary interference and local director Angelique Wood said it was sabotage. Bullying was another word used at the table. Telus wants to build a cell tower in the middle of the village to provide service but that structure would impact on viewscapes in the area.
Keremeos – RDOS will fund the Lower Similkameen Indian Band’s participation in a watershed plan to the tune of near $44 thousand dollars.
