Help!!
Psalm 121 may well contain the reflections of a pilgrim on his trek to Jerusalem. While walking along difficult terrain his natural concern would have been about his safety as he walked. Danger from bandits was even more unsettling. His assurance was that his help came from the One who was powerful enough to create heaven and earth. The pilgrim was in good hands in three ways and we can have the same help.
Sure footing underneath
“He will not let your foot slip” The trail could well be rocky. An injury from a fall while on the way would be disastrous. Our spiritual foundation also needs to be free of pitfalls. If moral principles and just practices crumble we are not on solid ground.
Protective shade above
The sun can be devastating on a long, hot, dusty trek. Both the sun and the moon are usually a welcome presence but the sun can deliver harmful rays. Our head is particularly vulnerable. In a spiritual sense we are also vulnerable to influences on our mind that are harmful. The Lord can provide the filter we need just as the atmosphere filters out harmful rays from the sun.
Guards all around
Not only is the Lord interested in providing sure footing underneath and protection above us, he is prepared to place guards all around us to constantly be there for us in our comings and goings. It is likely that none of us realize how often the Lord has interceded for us. We question why God wasn’t there when something bad happens without realizing how many times He was there.
“My help comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.” Ps. 121
