The community of Oliver has again rallied together to assist the residents of Park Place who have been given notice to vacate their homes before September 1st. This has resulted in financial and emotional hardship for all the people affected. Through a fund raising event and donations from businesses, individuals and churches, just over $13,000 has been raised to date to assist those residents hardest hit financially.
Leaders from the community and representatives of “Churches that Care” combined to form a committee to review applications for assistance from Park Place residents. In keeping with the practice of the last few years, the aim was to focus on meeting pressing financial needs in a speedy and impartial way. Donors, churches and fundraisers who chose to channel their giving through this committee were made aware of this policy. $12,800 is being distributed to 19 applicants. The Committee will make further distributions as more funds come in.
Applications were sorted into three categories: needy, more needy and most needy. Every applicant did receive some assistance.
The Committee appreciates the graciousness of those who responded by saying that they would be able to manage on their own; preferring the relief fund be used for those who needed it more.
“Churches That Care” was formed several years to serve as a vehicle through which assistance can be given to people in our community when disaster strikes. Donations are eligible for income tax receipts and can still be made at Valley First Credit Union.
