Who is affected?
British Columbia is transitioning responsibility for end-of-life management of packaging and printed paper (PPP) from governments and their taxpayers to industry and their consumers. As part of this approach, producers (companies and organizations that supply PPP to residential consumers) were required, under the BC Recycling Regulation, to have or be part of an approved stewardship plan.
In a nutshell – consumers pay a little more for packaging at the store, that fee goes to MMBC (Multi Material BC) that will pay collectors of recyclables.
How will this change things in Oliver. Negotiations begin today with BFI Canada which collects the blue bags from the curb. The plan with everyone on board is mandated to begin in May 2014.
It brings revenue to the game which could result in saving here at the local level and it can mean that more products will be picked up – more details later.
The MMBB presentation was given by the RDOS to the Oliver Town Council – first in the region.
