BC Tree Fruits Cooperative will be closing it’s Vaughan Avenue packinghouse in Kelowna this fall.
The packinghouse will continue to pack cherry and pear crops for the upcoming season.
This decision allows BC Tree Fruits to implement the current strategic plan that supports the estimated apple crop volume for the upcoming season.
Operations will be streamlined in both the north and south by utilizing the existing packinghouses in Winfield, Oliver and Osoyoos.
As for those working at the Kelowna packinghouse, BC Tree Fruits CEO Alan Tyabji says, “We are in consultation with the Union to ensure the best possible outcomes for our employees. We are committed to achieving the best possible returns for our members.”
BC Tree Fruits will be making the necessary updates to facilities at three packinghouses. This includes the Winfield packinghouse upgrades of a new $7.5 million Controlled Atmosphere storage facility and over $1 million in upgraded equipment including a new sizer, electronic upgrades and a new bin filler system.
Tyabji says the upgrades are necessary to remain competitive in the industry and provide the best returns for Growers.
