Disconnected
Our 9 year old grandson came to me with a battery operated toy car that wasn’t working. After several efforts to make it work I gave up and informed him that, since it was only a cheap item, he might as well throw it away. But Timmy didn’t give up. He went away with the car, took it apart and found a loose wire in the mechanism. When he brought it back to me we inserted batteries that we knew were good and behold … it worked!
We sometimes treat others, and ourselves, that way. We look at someone who is really down and see them as disposable junk, not worth trying to fix. We get depressed about our own state and conclude that we are not worth keeping either. Jesus met a number of people like that but He found the loose wire, the disconnection. He was derided as the friend of despised tax collectors and sinners, even befriending prostitutes. He had a way of getting inside and identifying what was broken. Better still, He could make them whole. He still invites people in the words of Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
