Fight to get justice on power bills continues in Hedley
James J. McCulloch, a 92 year old WW2 vet, has seen an increase of about $500 for the December-January bill, to $1400 for the two month period. He has a number of energy efficient appliances, lives in a single wide trailer and plans on replacing an ageing heater.
Bruce and Barry live in an 8 year old home they have built themselves which has double paned windows and includes insulation in interior walls- they close off some rooms in the winter if they are not using them. They use a pellet stove for heat in the winter, and a heat pump- and their bill was $1400 for the Dec-Jan period as well.
Valerie J. Beckmanwhose bill appears low, is on the list because that $320 bill was due to a SINGLE baseboard heater keeping a room just above freezing so the pipes wouldn’t burst. The home was unoccupied as they had just purchased it and did not plan on living in it until the new year. In contrast, on the same property, a commercial space at the lower rate housed them for 5 days, using hot water for showers, two baseboard heaters, lights and a hotplate and the power bill came to only $152 and change.
