Online registration for September is now open for all girls – those wishing to continue in Guiding and those joining for the first time. Girl Guides of Canada introduced online registration last year to facilitate the administration process of organizing over 70,000 girls into units.
The downside to saving time, money and trees is that there is no longer the face-to-face contact with parents that was guaranteed at the traditional registration night. The human element of registration night offered Guiders the opportunity to ask parents to help with meetings and possibly become a leader.
The computer age of Guiding has left units everywhere with a shortage of volunteers such that girls are being turned away and larger than ideal units are facing programming challenges.
By volunteering just a few hours a week, Guiders help provide a safe, inclusive, all-girl-environment that invites girls to challenge themselves, find their voice, meet new friends and make a difference in the world, one community at a time.
