During the month of June – RCMP will take part in a province-wide Gun Amnesty aimed at reducing the number of firearms in our communities, therefore enhancing both public and police officer safety.
The amnesty will give residents of BC a safe way to dispose of weapons, imitation weapons as well as related equipment and ammunition which they are not legally entitled to own, or which they no longer want.
The BC Gun Amnesty is just another method police agencies across BC are using to help keep our communities safe by removing unwanted guns.
During the 2006 BC Gun Amnesty, in excess of 3,200 guns were turned in to police including over 500 handguns and 725 other unwanted weapons. 96,500 rounds of ammunition, a rocket launcher and a machine gun were also turned in. That year in Surrey, the first day of the Amnesty yielded 5 rifles, 3 handguns and 1 pellet gun.
For obvious reasons, people are asked not to deliver weapons to any detachment and not answer their door with a weapon in their hands.
People with unwanted weapons, firearms or ammunition are encouraged to turn them in by calling the RCMP to arrange for a police officer to pick up the weapons.
