Rates at the Campbell Mountain, Oliver and Okanagan Falls landfills will increase May 1 for garbage, construction and demolition waste.
Regular garbage will increase to $72 from $65 per tonne. Asphalt shingles, concrete and masonry will raise to $50 from $15 per tonne while gypsum will increase to $105 from $75 per tonne. Other materials are also subject to an increase in charges.
Despite the higher garbage fees, the RDOS will not be increasing curbside collection rates for rural residents.
The increase in tipping fees is a result of a steady decline in the amount of garbage collected at landfills resulting in a drop in revenues.
“As materials are diverted through composting and recycling programs, we reduce the amount of garbage received,” explained Doug French, Public Works Manager.
“Every year the revenue from garbage decreases. Unfortunately the rates need to increase to cover operating costs.”
French points to a recent lifecycle report showing garbage tipping fees will eventually stabilize around $85 per tonne. Only two years ago the fees were $55 per tonne.
“Recycling programs exist for most appliances, electronics, lighting equipment and some hazardous waste,” said French. “Home owners who take advantage of these free recycling programs will realize the benefit.”
