Branch 97 of the Oliver Legion will be holding their Annual Candlelight Tribute in the Veterans Section of the Oliver Cemetary on Sunday, May 5 starting at 4:30pm. This ceremony is “the Passing of the Torch of Remembrance from the older generation to the younger. The event starts with a formal Legion Tribute followed by the placement of Lit candles (in red plastic wind topped candles) on each of the veterans headstones in the Veterans section. This is accomplished by a young person and a veteran or other adult taking a candle to the headstone and the ypung person placing the candle on the headstone. If a person has a specific headstone they wish to place a candle, they will be given the opportunity to do so at the start of the placements. There are approximately 200 headstones in the section -if there are other veterans buried in graves other than the veterans section, they may be placed their before or on completion in the veterans section. This is to give thanks to those veterans who served and returned. We wish to see as many youth and other adults from our community or any other community participating. The Oliver Youth Ambassadors will be in attendance as well as Air Cadets, scouts and other youth groups and as many individual youth as possible – for the adults participating the Legion lounge will be open after the ceremony. The gates of the cemetary will be open all night as these candles shine through the darkness with a red glow on the hillside, making a glowing tribute to these veterans. The local crimewatch members will be on security duty during the night.
