Spencer McKay named full time assistant coach for UBC men’s basketball
Vancouver, BC – UBC men’s basketball head coach Kevin Hanson is pleased to announce the hiring of Spencer McKay as the program’s new full-time assistant coach.
McKay brings an impressive resume to the Point Grey campus. A four-time Canada West All-Star and 3-time All-Canadian as a player at the University of Victoria from 1986-91, McKay remains the program’s all-time leading scorer, averaging 18.4 points/game during his career. He played three seasons under legendary coach Ken Shields and two years for the late Guy Vetrie.
“We are thrilled to be adding Spencer to our coaching staff,” said UBC head coach Kevin Hanson. “He really impressed everyone involved in the interview process, including our players who had the opportunity to be coached by him on the floor as part of the process and they loved his style.”
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to join the Thunderbirds having been an admirer of the UBC program for a long time,” said McKay. “Having known Kevin since our playing days, I’m eager for the chance to coach with him and learn from him. UBC has a lot of good, young talent on its roster and I can’t wait to start working with them.”
Following his time in the CIS, McKay went on to play 16 years abroad in Belgium, Austria, Spain, France, Portugal, Mexico, and Taiwan. He also was a member of the Canadian national team for 10 years (1985-1995), highlighted by an appearance at the 1994 World Championships in Toronto in which Canada finished seventh.
After retiring as a player McKay remained in Europe for another seven years coaching at the International School of Brussels. He returned to British Columbia last year, becoming an assistant coach at his alma mater for the 2012-13 season.
“Obviously my extensive experience in Europe is an asset, not only in knowing what it takes to get to the next level, but also because of my connections with regards to recruiting,” said McKay. “There is an abundance of talent throughout Europe and many are just looking for an opportunity to come to North America.”
“His experience can only enhance the development of our players,” said Hanson. “From his impressive 16 year pro career, to playing for legendary Canadian coach Ken Shields, to representing Canada at the international level, Spencer has a lot to offer. As well, I’m looking forward to him bringing some European style coaching to our program.”
McKay is currently working toward his Level 4 coaching certification at the National Coaching Institute in Victoria and continues to run his annual Nothing’ But Net Basketball Camp in his hometown of Oliver, BC. He replaces Casey Archibald who stepped down following the 2012-13 season.
“Putting the logo on my chest for the first time might feel a little strange, but I’ll tell you this; I’m a loyal guy, UBC is now my team, and I am proud to be called a Thunderbird.”
