Every year the Outdoor Recreation Council surveys its members to get a reading on what rivers face the biggest challenges – in the last 7 years – the Kettle, the Okanagan, and the Similkameen have been mentioned but not this year.
2013 – report – Peace River at Ft. Saint John, Fraser River at Hope and the Elk River at Fernie have been reported as the three rivers where the most concern should be shown.
Here is the list of where local rivers have been mentioned in an annual top ten of concern for rivers:
2012 – Kettle River 4th
2011 – Kettle River 1st, and Similkameen 8th – possible dam at Princeton.
2010 – Kettle River 1st – low stream volume and users wanting to take more from the watershed
2009 – Kettle River 2nd
2008 – Kettle River 6th, and Okanagan 10th
2007 – Okanagan 8th – Okanagan channelization
2013 marks the 21st annual “most endangered rivers” list from the Outdoor Recreation Council (ORC). The preparation of this list is the most comprehensive initiative of its kind in Canada. It is an accurate snapshot of the issues that face our rivers and those facing the greatest threat to their ecological health.
