Those two pictures represent the water main break on Lakeside Drive, that contributed to the water hammer in the system and thus stirring up everything in the distribution system.
With the break, it went up from 1000 to 1400 US gpm, then the pressure dropped 30 to 40 psi (so velocity increased but pressure dropped), then crews hurried to shut valves off to isolate the break. This caused the surge of water to find other routing through the system and this is why we received calls in different parts of Town. The water scours the pipe and stirs up any sediment, manganese & other substances.
Water Hammer Definition: is a pressure surge or wave caused when a fluid (usually a liquid but sometimes also a gas) in motion is forced to stop or change direction suddenly (momentum change). Water hammer commonly occurs when a valve closes suddenly at an end of a pipeline system, and a pressure wave propagates in the pipe.
