The number of reports relating to violent crime in Oliver, including assault, sex offences and robbery, remained stable this year compared with 2011’s numbers. Most property crime types also remained relatively stable, with the exception of vehicle theft, which increased by 100% from 2011 numbers. This increase reflects the pervasively higher rates of vehicles being stolen in the area from the second quarter of 2012 to the end of the year.
Vehicle theft complaints in Osoyoos saw a similar trend, although not quite as pronounced as in Oliver.
During the fourth quarter of 2012, Osoyoos RCMP responded to 616 calls for service2, compared with 582 calls during the fourth quarter of 2011. This corresponds to an increase of 6%. In total, Osoyoos RCMP responded to 3266 calls in 2012, compared with 3148 calls in 2011. This corresponds to an increase of 4%.
During the fourth quarter of 2012, Oliver RCMP responded to 682 calls for service1, compared with 753 calls during the fourth quarter of 2011. This corresponds to a decrease of 9%. In total, Oliver RCMP responded to 3397 calls in 2012, compared with 3294 calls in 2011. This corresponds to an increase of 3%.
In Oliver
Business B&E’s and ‘other’ B&E’s increased by 33 and 50%, respectively. Theft reports declined by 18% while disturbance and mischief files showed minor increases of 2% and 7%. Disturbances and mischief complaints remained relatively stable, with minor increases of between 3 and7%.
Drug Enforcement RCMP investigated 12 drug offences in Oliver during the fourth quarter of 2012. On October 3rd Regional GIS members executed a search warrant on a residence in the 5000 block of Sumac St., seizing 40 marihuana plants, 13 kgs of loose marihuana drying inside the residence, three rifles and paraphernalia. The 53-year-old male resident of the home was arrested and charged with production of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and unlawful storage of a firearm. Another individual, a 63-year-old male who was on the scene, was also arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking. The matter is currently before the courts.
In November 2012, Penticton RCMP’s Drug Task Force, in conjunction with Oliver RCMP conducted an operation targeting street-level drug traffickers over the course of five days. 7 individuals, including 1 Oliver resident, face charges associated to this operation.
