A 33 year old Kelowna man faces a multitude of charges after police seized several loaded firearms during a recent traffic stop.
On January 11, 2013 at approximately 10:45 pm a Kelowna RCMP member attempted to stop a grey Mercury Sable driving without a headlight on Highway 33. The vehicle sped away but police located it stopped on Davie Road. The male driver was seen quickly exiting the vehicle and attempting to retrieve something from the trunk. Concerned the driver was attempting to retrieve a weapon; the police officer drew his service pistol and demanded the man stop what he was doing. The man was arrested without incident. A search of his vehicle revealed 9 firearms, 4 of which were loaded, and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
A search warrant was later executed at the man’s residence and two other firearms were seized. The investigation is ongoing.
The man faces numerous potential charges including Flight from Police, Careless Use of a Firearm, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Mischief.

Update: In total, 13 rifles and handguns were seized along with more than 2000 rounds of ammunition.
Police say 20 bullet clips had been illegally modified to hold up to 30 rounds.
David Michael Toneff, 33, is charged with 25 gun offenses.

Toneff’s father told officers his son is a grade 8 dropout who joined the Canadian Military, served in Afghanistan, and was later diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
The investigation started in January after police pulled over a vehicle for a burned out headlight and found nine guns, four of them loaded, along with ammunition, 29 gun magazines, an axe and a machete.
