A female pedestrian was killed on Hwy 97 North of the Gallagher Lake corner , when she ran across the road and into the path of northbound vehicle.
On Tuesday evening on February 19th at around 18:45, the Oliver RCMP responded to a fatal collision on Hwy 97 in the Gallagher Lake area, once on scene Oliver RCMP requested additional resources from the RCMP South Okanagan Traffic Services due to the nature of the collision. Witnesses to the collision reported to investigators that they saw the woman run across the road from the west side of the highway into the path of an oncoming northbound black 2004 Chevrolet Impala. Witnesses immediately came to the woman’s aid, including a physician however she had suffered immediate fatal injuries as a result of the collision.
The highway was closed for a short period of time on Tuesday evening to permit a proper scene examination by an RCMP traffic collision reconstruction analyst. Highway 97 in this rural area is a two-laned undivided roadway with no lighting. Lighting conditions were dark and clear with near zero temperatures.
“In addition to the scene and vehicle examination, our investigators are trying to firmly establish the woman’s activities that day into the evening and up to the time of the collision. We are looking for information about her exact whereabouts and what she was doing.” stated Cpl Bryce Petersen.
The 69 year old male driver stopped and called 911 to report the collision and remained at scene to cooperate with the investigation. Alcohol or drugs have been ruled out as factor in the involving the driver’s actions. No charges have been laid at this time against the driver.
The collision is being investigated by the South Okanagan Traffic Services and BC Coroners Services.

The 46 year woman is believed to have lived on the west side of the road. Name will be released when all next of kin notified.
