The SOSS Hornets travelled to Kamloops this past weekend to play in the 1st Annual Elmer Froese Tournament held at Sahali secondary school. Elmer was a key figure in the high school basketball scene in Kamloops, and he was instrumental in bringing the AA provincial tournament to Kamloops over 10 years ago. The tournament was a round robin format. The Hornets played 3 games in their pool. They emerged with 2 wins and one loss which was good enough for 2 nd place in their pool. The Hornets defeated LVR of Nelson 78-62, Gurk Dhaliwal had 21 points and Amit Chahal added 20. In their second game the Hornets lost to Duchess Park of Prince George 72-61 both Dhaliwal and Chahal scored 16 points. In their final pool game the Hornets played the host team, Sahali. It was a spirited affair with the Hornets trailing at half by 6 points. In the second half the Hornets applied a pressured defense and executed their offense very well as they defeated Sahali by 10 points 89-79, Gurk Dhaliwal had 31 points, Amit Chahal had 20 and Parm Sidhu added 11. Sidhu was only able to play in two games this weekend as he bruised his heel early in the tournament. The Hornets then played B Pool 2nd place team DP Todd of Prince George, the Hornets played a strong first half of basketball as they led 40-27 at half. They pushed the lead to 20 but faltered a bit in the end as they hung on to win 73-64. Gurk Dhaliwal had 20 points and Amit Chahal poured in 21 points. Chahal was named to the tournament all star team. The Hornets record stands at 17 wins and 9 losses and they are 4-1 in league. On Thursday they will play Kelowna Christian in Kelowna. The winner of that game will win the league and be able to play the playoffs at home.
