Map released by Ottawa shows Penticton and Summerland split into two ridings with the West Kootenays joined with the South Okanagan.
New Riding with Penticton in it: South Okanagan/West Kootenay
New Riding with Summerland in it: Central Okanagan/Coquihalla
It makes some sense that Keremeos, Penticton, Oliver, Osoyoos are together in one federal riding but it makes no sense to join parts of the Purcell Mt. Range to Penticton. It makes no sense to join Summerland with Logan Lake/Merritt when it is a bedroom community/suburb of Penticton.
It would mean a person elected in Castlegar would serve two distinct regions and some MP elected in Penticton having much difficulty getting over the various passes to serve constituents.
This is not an easy job restructuring boundaries but the Okanagan-Similkameen are one unit and the Kootenays are another.
On this map follow the thin line – as parts of the thicker line are the old boundaries.
