“The South Okanagan Concert Society executive were thrilled when the announcement came that Jane Coop, Pianist, was appointed to the Order of Canada, our country’s highest honour for lifetime achievement. Jane has performed twice for the concert society on the stage of the old Venables Auditorium. When she first came to this community, she was already a professor in the Music Department of U.B.C. Her elegant and brilliant performances amazed our local audiences and long talks after the performances introduced us to the demands on a young mother, teacher and professional musician still developing her professional career. I particularly recall her talking about the difficulties finding adaptable childcare, the long, often irregular hours teaching and the additional hours needed every day to practice. She told us that it was also important to look attractive, even sexy, and that CD covers were designed for eye not music appeal. She laughed at our stories about her mentor and Toronto teacher, Anton Kuerti. She took advanced piano studies from him and knew his ability to play Liszt at top speed. Our aging Steinway had to be tuned at the intermission when he also performed here. The Steinway had never before had such a work out!
Now one of Canada’s most prominent and distinguished artists, Jane Coop, is probably way beyond our budget. We all wish her well and remember with pride her concerts here as her career was first blooming. AND talking about blooms, make sure you mark your calendar for the next South Okanagan Concert Society performance Friday February 8th at 7:30 pm at the temporary venue of the Oliver Alliance Church. Daniel Bolshoy, guitarist, brought the house down last year and is returning with Jasper Wood, violinist. Jasper has performed here before to enthusiastic acclaim. Together they call themselves “Duo Rendezvous”. Their virtuosity is not to be missed! Tickets available at Beyond Bliss in Oliver, Imperial Office Pro in Osoyoos and at the door.”
