Snapping Trees – Downed Power Lines
The trees at Baldy are so heavily loaded with snow, that they are snapping and landing on power lines, and snapping and landing on ski runs. I am writing this at 7:00am Wednesday – a large tree next door just snapped and took out the power line (the one you don’t like in my photos). Fortis is on the way up for the fourth time in 36 hours – my home has been without power more than it has had power in the last 36 hours.
It looks like we may finally be getting some sun today – desperately needed to help the trees shed their loads. I have photos of the last time we had a problem this severe – my guess is 1984, based on the truck I was driving at the time.
I just called Randal to tell him that I had called Fortis – he was just heading out the door to deal with chunks of tree that came down at his place – one on the roof of his shop.
The amount of snow we have here now makes it look like February. I will not complain of too much snow – it is the best we could hope for to start the season. Fortis, the ski hill staff, and the snow removal contractor need a break.
In a normal year at this time, we would be watching and hoping for enough snow to open even some of the ski area. This year, I am watching the pre-season work list grow, as the snow keeps coming. They will be cutting and dragging trees off the runs before they can be opened.
I’ll put this in my outbox, so when the power comes on a few hours from now, it will be sent to you.
I know that you don’t embed video on your site, but some of your readers may be interested in the video I embedded in the blog early this morning – one of the trees going down on a power line yesterday was caught on video.
