Business items discussed:
1. Tucelnuit Elementary School – District has applied for $5000 Community Connections grant and the Ministry has all but guaranteed these funds. Town of Oliver to sign off on this as well.
2. Community Outreach and Engagement – Chair Marieze Tarr said she was disappointed with the three meetings held to date- so much effort going into them with only a handful of parents and residents taking the time to attend. Last one next Wednesday (corrected) in Osoyoos.
3. SOSS construction update from Mitch Van Aller – over 100 ways of saving money on the new school have been approved saving $1.2 million but the project is still about a half million dollars over budget. Van Aller says the costs are a “moving target”.
He has a contingency fund of almost a million dollars and says he will bring the project in to the established budget before the doors open in September.
4. New policy on donations and sponsorships approved. Further policy change on employee conduct, sexual orientation and board procedures will get further review by the board and the public.
5. Osoyoos Secondary School’s field trip to Santiago, Cuba during spring break has been approved. Students will get hands on involvement in projects underway including mangrove & fruit tree reforestation, beach and community cleanups and teaching about drug awareness.
