OIB Chief Clarence calls those that work at the federal Department of Fisheries “a bunch of idiots”. This was not a casual reference in a long conversation I had with the Chief today on a number of subjects. Louie repeated this phrase several times when talking about a government department that he says really does not consult with neighbours or people concerned about the river.
Louie was talking about a fish farm permit issued to an operation on Road 17 south of Oliver where ‘Arctic Char’ are to be raised and waste water will be discharged into the river.
The chief says DFO can take no credit for the re-introduction of native salmon into our streams but will allow businesses that may affect wildlife negatively. Salmon enhancement on Okanagan River is being done by the Okanagan Native Alliance.
Recently concerned citizens asked for and were granted an audience with the band council on the issue of river water quality and Louie says the government should be there to protect the environment not always be so interested in helping business make money no matter the cost to nature.
Business Development on OIB land: Chief Louie says he is in the dark on the Corrections Facility – he thinks some announcement is to be made soon but doesn’t know when. He expects a contractor to get the job next year with construction most likely not till 2014 and completion in 2016. On the Senkulmen business park, he says lots of companies kicking tires but nothing beyond what is up now and those buildingsĀ in the planning stages. He says lots of people have plans but details are on paper and nothing is happening on the ground. He is happy with the progress of housing at Canyon Desert near the golf course. In Osoyoos more projects are in the planning stages including a service station and housing in East Osoyoos near the highway.
