Catherine Megan Nichols – ring a bell? – Probably not. How abut Meg or Mrs. Lougheed. Now you have got it.
Meg Lougheed is 90 today and in the middle of a large celebration at the home of one of her daughters – Maggie.
Mrs. Lougheed as she is known to many former SOHS/SOSS students taught Home Economics for 25 years in Oliver. But there is more to the story of Meg.
Miss Nichols, a welsh girl was born in Edmonton November 10, 1922. She attended school there and graduated from the University of Alberta. 3 years of Household Economics as it was called back then. Then off to Toronto as a student dietitian. She worked for about a year at the Toronto General Hospital. She then got a job as a Home Ec. teacher in Creston – the town where she met Hugh Lougheed who was to become the father of her eight children. Hugh and his brothers were into logging and Hugh drove a ‘dozer’.
In 1946 Meg and Hugh married in Creston. The family followed along on a regular basis for many years to come. The family moved down the big hill into the valley living in Osoyoos for a time and then bought orchard land and a big farm house north of Oliver – a home she continues to live in – to this day.
Children: Holly, David, Brian, Shauna, Neil, Allan, (Maggie) Margaret, and finally (Sam)Samuel. Keeping up with 10 grandchildren must be a chore as well.
Happy Birthday Mrs. Lougheed- many more for sure.
