RCMP received a call of two illegal immigrants spotted on Main Street in Osoyoos who had been denied entry into Canada the prior day at the Osoyoos Port of Entry. The males, one from Michigan and the other from New Orleans both have extensive criminal records in the United States. Members began making patrols for the two with the assistance of RCMP’s Integrated Border Enforcement Team, the RCMP Regional GIS team and Police Dog Services. Police located the two males (and a dog) on 87th Street on October 24th at 8:15 a.m. where a foot pursuit ensued as the males ran over the roofs of various property structures near 87th Street and Quince Lane.
One male was arrested a short time later on top of a roof and escorted down. The dog was also secured with the assistance of the property owner. The second male was able to elude police. Several calls were received by Osoyoos residents as they spotted the second male crawling through their yards however he still proved difficult to locate. Again further assistance from the public was received after the male was spotted running north bound on the beach off of Spartan Drive. Subsequently the male was apprehended on 104th Street. Both males admitted to crossing into Canada illegally through the mountains just west of Osoyoos. They crossed on October 23 approximately 2 hours after being denied entry. After crossing illegally neither reported to Canada Customs. Both claimed they were coming to Osoyoos to meet up with a friend who they then planned to attempt to smuggle into the US. Both males were subject to an Immigration hearing at which time they were issued Exclusion Orders and returned to the United States.
The Osoyoos RCMP would like to thank those that helped by calling in the suspects location. Without this assistance the male likely would have eluded capture.
