Oliver Rural Area C Director Allan Patton brought before the board a motion, similar to one passed by Oliver Town Council earlier this year, calling for a moratorium on the installation of smart meters until an opt-out option is allowed.

The vote was 9 to 8 in favour of writing to FortisBC and the BC Utilities Commission attaching the passed resolution. About 60 municipalities and local governments in BC have taken a stand on the issue because of concerns expressed by voters.
Summerland Mayor Janice Perrino spoke against the motion as she said the science is not convincing and that most experts say there is no danger.
Advocates against smart meters in Oliver will speak to council next Monday and will host an information meeting for the public later in the week.
