Decisions made by Town of Oliver Council on Monday October 9, 2012:
1. Will pay half the cost of new curbing at Savvios on Main Street to a limit of $1250 with restaurant owner given option to hire certified contractor or leave to Town to complete. The curb letdown at this location not done to standards many years ago when the building was built. Changes will increase the width for entering the property from the highway and improve the appearance.
2. Annual staff Christmas Party – Council agreed with report from Town Manager and no fees will be charged for anyone invited to this party (dropping a previous $7 charge) however no free alcohol will be supplied. Organizers of such event will need to provide safe transportation for anyone in need of it.
3. Council will support a grant application of SD #53 in the amount of $12,500 for provincial government funding for the new HUB at Oliver Elementary School. The HUB is a one stop centre for parents to make connections with a number of government agencies.
4. Council granted two development variance permits – one allowing a manufactured home at 530 Hillcrest Avenue and a second allowing a height increase for a “cyclone chip bin” at Structurlam’s new plant (310 Co-op Avenue) in the old General Coach building . The increase allowed is from 15.0 metres to 17.1 metres. Structurlam is set now to do a start up within the next week employing 34 people in shifts. It will be manufacturing a specialized wood product for Canadian consumption.
