Could you write a brief statement about your experience at UBCM?
Was it worth the cost?
Did you enjoy the experience?
Would you go again?
What did you learn?
Was the educational experience worthwhile?
Did you attend meetings with government ministers?
Who should attend UBCM conventions in future – how many should go to be effective?
Did you hear the speeches of political leaders and what did you think?
Answer from Maureen Doerr
I found it worth the cost for a one time attendance if nothing else just to meet different municipalities, government ministers and network.
There was alot to take in and it is very much was about discussion and debate, I would say very little about actual learning, but gives you a better understand about the relationship between municipal and provincial governments
In a 3 year term, I think everyone should go once, but unless there is a pressing matter and we need to meet with ministers that is all that is required
It was great to network with other municipalities and realize that the challenges we face as a community is being felt all over BC in one form or another.
Education is not really part of UBCM.
We met with three ministers while in Victoria, to talk about policing (once we reach 5000), water twinning, and concerns we have with BC Assessment Authority.
The speeches by Christy Clark and Adrian Dix were both compelling as they always are in an election year.
