Regional District satisfied with internal handling of 2010 Campbell Mountain salvaging concern
Subsequent to media reports regarding the Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen’s response to an episode of salvaging at the Campbell Mountain landfill facility in 2010, the Regional District’s Chief Administrative Officer this morning released this statement:
The Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen is satisfied with measures taken by SSG Holdings to resolve concerns about salvaging of materials that occurred in 2010 at the Campbell Mountain landfill facility.
At the time the episode was reported, the Regional District, through its Solid Waste Facilities Coordinator, immediately made clear to SSG Holdings its position on salvaging. There have been no further reports of salvaging involving Regional District or employees of contracted service providers.
The Regional District is proud of the professional standard maintained at its landfill operations. Our landfills operate according to the best management practices for landfill operations and are routinely inspected by provincial environmental agencies.
Our Public Works team will present to the RDOS Board in early September an updated Solid Waste Management Plan that will increase waste diversion to 73% from its current 51%. This master plan also provides for increased recycling at multi-family residences and workplaces; increased reuse and recycling of construction, demolition and renovation waste; and achieving these goals in a financially sustainable manner.
Our employees consider the Okanagan-Similkameen region their home and take pride in delivering services and resources that make it a great place to live. We appreciate our partner, SSG Holdings, shares our values.
Bill Newell
Chief Administrative Officer
