If you’re vacationing in the Okanagan, officials say dead salmon washing up on local beaches are no cause for alarm.
Dozens of salmon have washed up on the Osoyoos beaches on Lakeshore Drive and near Haynes Point.
It appears to be part of the natural process the fish undergo as they migrate on their way to spawn, but the sight of so many dead fish is an unfamiliar one to many because salmon numbers have been lower in recent years.
Howie Wright, the fisheries manager for the Okanagan Nation Alliance, says warm waters in shallow parts of the lake don’t provide enough oxygen for some fish.
“We do know that mortality occurs each year,” he said. “What we don’t know is when that happens or the magnitude of that mortality. And right now, in our harvest plans, we do include an en route mortality factor.”

Lot of inquiries this week about this – took a drive last night to Osoyoos no sign of the problem
