This exceptionally talented group of local artists took on the challenge of representing Ansell Adam’s black and white photograph of industrial buildings in San Francisco, and came up bursting with creative ideas in so many different media. Russell Work superimposed some images of Oliver over Adams’ original photo to create on his computer an ever changing image of the original morphing into Oliver. Marion Trimble assembled a collage of magazine text as a re-creation of the photo, complete with graffiti. Enid Baker added colour to cloth to portray her painted vision of the work, and Terry Irvine dyed fabric which she transformed into her version of the image. Barb Levant used her loom to weave yet another take on the photo, and JoAnn Turner painted it on the surfaces of a wooden cabinet. Leo Pedersen constructed it of pieces of painted wood, and Kurt Hutterli made a three dimensional version of corrugated cardboard plus electrical wires which had to be seen to be appreciated. The challenge was dedicated to the ninth member of the group, encaustic artist Thea Haubrich, whose illness prevented her participation. For those who missed seeing the group at work at the Quail’s Nest all last week, they will be able to see the finished products displayed at the Fall Art Show and Sale which will be held on September 29th and 30th this year. Congratulations to Oliver’s gifted artists for this stunning display of their talents.
