1. Boys and Girls Club made a presentation on cuts to funding for Youth Centre. Council told the club and many supporters who attended the meeting that they should look to the Oliver Parks and Recreation Society for funding – as it is the primary supplier of youth activities in the community and it is funded by both the rural and town area taxpayers. The Boys and Girls club has received $15000 in the past for the Youth Centre with $5000 of that earmarked for the Air Cadets and their hanger. In 2012 the grant in aid was cut to $10,000 with the message that funding will not be supplied in 2013.
2. Council agreed to allow $7000 to be taken from the Oliver Fire Department equipment reserve for the purchase of 4 complete sets of swift water rescue dry suits and rope bags. Ten members of the Oliver Fire Department have now been trained to use such equipment on the river. Council expressed an interest in equipping the fire department but asked them to report back within a year on co-operation with the local search and rescue organization which is charged with the same rescue operations.
3. Council will re-allocate some capital funding to provide wheelchair access to its Council Chambers building. Funding for a sprinkler system at the Town Hall will be put on hold until 2013.
4. Council postponed passage of a revised purchasing policy to allow council members to promote local purchasing of supplies and services.
5. Council discussed the importance of attending provincial UBCM meetings. This year in Victoria during the period – September 24 to 28. Three members of council expressed an interest in attending.
