No televised coverage this week
1. Ron Eithier appeared as a delegation to talk about his new business at 5720 Main Street across from the Southwind Crossing Mall. He was asked to get an acceptable letter re an old septic sewer system and then a business license would be issued. A number of other issues identified by the building inspector have been solved to the satisfaction of council.
2. An application from Community Futures for assistance to do economic gardening in the Oliver region was accept by council in the amount of $7500. It is a start up grant for one year with a report required by council on exactly what Oliver area businesses are assisted by this program.
3. Council has asked staff to give a brief report prior to the end of summer on the possibility of revitilization tax exemptions for certain business areas in the municipality in an effort to spur growth and construction.
4. Tucelnuit Water Parcel Tax and Connection Fee Bylaw 1064 – a housekeeping matter from 2004 was given formal approval by council
5. A draft zoning bylaw – #1330 was given first and second readings with new changes to parking requirements in the new C3 commercial area and changes in wording to the M2 Industrial zone. The parking requirements would be relaxed on empty unused lots in the downtown area allowing development of a ground floor business with no required off street parking. In the M2 Industrial area – gravel crushing, cement plants and other uses will be added to the definition of “Industry”. Asphalt plants are not allowed. Once all the changes are re-written into a formal document – this matter will go to a Public Hearing on July 16 with a council meeting following to give it passage.
6. Two houskeeping bylaws were approved including the Delegation of Authority bylaw and a Routine Release of Closed Meeting Resolutions bylaw which will see a review of such decision every three months.
7. Council authorized the expenditure of $13,325 to the firm of Urbanics Consultants for a Hotel Study. The company will deal with hotel chains to determined what statistics and information are needed by them to help make a positive decision on bringing that type of accommodation to the Town of Oliver.
