The PGA (Professional Golfers Association) of BC will once again conduct fundraising events for the ALS foundation of BC at over 40 different courses all across the province in the next two weeks. This began six years ago and involves golf club professionals playing as many holes of golf as they can in a single day. Players seek pledges for their efforts, usually in the form of a certain amount per hole played or just a given amount for the day. Money can be pledged by calling the Fairview Mountain Golf Course Pro shop ( (250) 498-3521) or visiting the Pro shop itself.
Oliver’s Fairview Mountain’s teams have participated in this event since it’s inception and have always been one of the top money raisers in the province. As well, they have set records for the most holes played, this past year setting a new record of an unbelievable 306 holes of golf each between the hours of 4:17 am and 9:27 pm — 17 complete rounds of 18 holes in 17 hours and 10 minutes!!! This year’s players for Oliver’s Fairview Mountain are the same as last year, Paul Welsman and Patrick Martin. The attached photo is of Paul Welsman, Shirley Posnikoff one of the support team, and Patrick Martin as they completed play last year.
To maximize their efforts, the players and their assistants will be trying to better this record this coming Wednesday, June 20th at Fairview Mountain Golf Course, the Wednesday closest to the longest day of the year. The public is invited to come up to Fairview Mountain to watch some of the play and to cheer on our local professionals. As they play each 18 hole round in about an hour, come to sit on the balcony and join the cheering supporters as the golfers pass the clubhouse.
As a special feature, the Fairview Mountain clubhouse will be open for a SPECIAL ALS EVENT for everyone, including both members and the general public, from 5:00 to 10:00 pm on Weds the 20th. This will be a Patio Party featuring live music, games, a silent auction, draw prizes and all you can eat “appies” for $15 per person, with $5 going to the ALS fundraising. The players and their assistants will join the party after they have played their final holes. We welcome all to drop by to join the fun for a great cause.
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS ), also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects the person’s motor neurons that carry messages to the muscles resulting in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere; typically the person is immobilized or deceased within two to five years of the initial diagnosis. ALS can happen to anyone at anytime. The ALS Society of BC is dedicated to providing direct support to ALS patients, along with their families and caregivers, to ensure the best quality of life possible while living with ALS. Through assisting research, they are committed to find the cause of, and cure for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.
