Canadian wine will soon be flowing across the country after MPs voted as expected Wednesday to pass a private member’s bill that will allow for the shipment of wine between provinces.
Bill C-311, introduced by Okanagan Coquihalla MP Dan Albas, will amend the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act to remove a regulation that hinders domestic wine shipping.
In some jurisdictions, limits are placed on the volume of wine being shipped and require the beverage to be “on their person,” while others ban shipments between provinces altogether.
Private member’s bills rarely sail through Parliament. However, Bill C-311 had all-party support and passed third reading Wednesday night.
“Just passed the wine bill through parliament – wine freedom!” says NDP House Leader Nathan Cullen . “Little hiccup and then we moved it faster than expected through the house.”
The bill will now head to the Senate.
