Two serious criminal charges have been laid against a 33 year old Oliver man in connection with a weekend incident on OIB land that involved a women known to him.

Brian Douglas Louie will spend the next two weeks in the Kamloops Remand Centre and will appear June 6th via a video conference in a Penticton courtroom to answer the charges and hear any applications for bail.

His lawyer, Jim Pennington, told court officials his client had waived the reading of the information for 5 criminal charges. Two are for aggravated assault and assault causing bodily harm in connection with the incident Sunday May 20. A suspect was arrested according to one report at his mother’s home within hours and has been lodged in police cells in Oliver and then Penticton. The other charges laid today are not related to the May 20 incident.

ODN spent the afternoon in court in Penticton awaiting a first court hearing but the lack of judges seems to have prevented a first appearance. One member of the OIB council was in the courtroom as an observer.

Police are saying little and call the incident “domestic violence”  –

‘On this investigation I can report that the Oliver Detachment RCMP in conjunction with the Regional GIS are actively involved in an investigation which is appropriately categorized as Domestic Violence.  In keeping with victim privacy concerns and appropriate levels of confidentiality and sensitivity the Oliver Detachment will not be constructing a Media Release on this incident.  This position is consistent with all current protocols”  says Sergeant Ken Harrington of the Oliver RCMP detachment.
