On the left Ron Lee stands behind Riley Martin Saturday at the 25th anniversary celebrations of the Rick Hansen Relay in Oliver.
Ron was a Student Counselor at SOSS for many years, including the time when Riley Martin was in an accident that caused permanent T4 paraplegia. Riley faced many challenges returning to finish his grade 12 year in a wheelchair. Ron quietly and on his own initiative took up the role of Riley’s champion by ensuring the school was completely accessible and wheelchair friendly. Ron went above and beyond the school requirements by taking the time and effort to travel to Vancouver to meet with Riley’s rehabilitation team at GF Strong to make sure that he understood Riley’s exact needs. He was also instrumental in organizing a huge “Welcome Home Hockey Game” fundraiser for some of Riley’s new equipment requirements and allowed Riley to speak to elementary school students about overcoming disabilities. Ron went to great lengths to ensure that Riley’s final year of high school went as smoothly as possible and was a key factor in Riley being able to graduate with the rest of his class.
