Installation of the new traffic signals at the intersection of Highway 3 and Cottonwood Drive is complete.
Why this matters:
· Osoyoos is a popular destination for tourists, and many walk to beaches, stores and services in the community.
· Use of the intersection at Cottonwood Drive has increased substantially as it provides access to Cottonwood Park, vacation accommodations and local homes and farms.
· The installation of the new traffic signal will make the intersection safer for both motorists and pedestrians.
“This intersection has seen ever-increasing amounts of traffic over the years, far too much for an uncontrolled intersection. These signals will make a huge difference in east Osoyoos and greatly improve safety for pedestrians and drivers alike.”
-Boundary-Similkameen MLA John Slater
“This is a great breakthrough. The cooperation we’ve had from the Ministry of Transportation is incredible. When a major highway is part of our main street corridor, it’s just crucial to calm the traffic. We had some concerns, and the Province really listened and acted on those concerns.”
-Mayor of Osoyoos Stu Wells
Additional Information:
· The total project value is $273,500, and was done partnership with Osoyoos via a 50/50 cost share agreement.
· The Province is investing over $5 million this year in 50 projects across the province that will improve the safety of pedestrians, cyclists and motorists on highways near and through communities.
· The traffic signal was officially completed on April 27, 2012.
