Every spring, volunteer firefighters from around the province get together to train, share their experience, re-establish old contacts and make many new ones. This event is known as the ‘B.C. Volunteer Firefighters’ Spring Training Seminar’, or simply ‘Seminar’ to those in the know. The Oliver Fire Department (OFD) is very privileged to be able to host the seminar every other year. This weekend, May 4, 5, and 6 will find nearly four hundred fire fighters and another two hundred trainers, delegates, manufacturers representatives, and spouses, flock to Oliver for this years seminar. Twenty six different training events will take place at the community centre grounds, from basic fire fighting procedures to advanced rescue techniques. Many of the events will be marshalled by OFD members, and some of the top experts in their fields are brought in to share their vast knowledge. OFD makes every effort to create a ‘hands on’ training environment, so many of the events are visually stunning.
Members of the public are very much welcome to stroll around the community centre grounds and watch this invaluable training taking place. We only ask that that you respect the trainers and fire fighters, and stay safely out of their way. Be aware that many of the events are loud and involve ‘live fire’.
The training events start off with a ‘BANG!’ at eight am on Saturday. Be sure not to miss this years opening demonstration!
On a related note, May 4th is not only Star Wars day (May the 4th be with you), but is also the feast day of St. Florian, patron saint of fire fighters. What a fitting day to commence seminar!
Stop by and tell these hard working men and women that you’re proud of them and what they do!
Thanks to Spencer Tribbick for pictures and story and to the members fo the OFD for their dedicated work
