On Saturday, April 7, 2012, seven Special Olympics~South Okanagan local athletes participated in a Special Olympics swimming qualifier at the H2O Centre in Kelowna. Athletes Jack Mullin, Wayne Bierbaum, Jade Klaus, Barnabas LaFlamme (all of Oliver), Harlei Kelliher, Tony Batista and Alberto Holz ( of Osoyoos) competed in a number of events and brought sixteen ribbons home.
When the last swimmer left the pool, results showed the following:
Jack Mullin: 2nd in 50M Butterfly &100M Individual Medley
Wayne Bierbaum: 2nd in 25M Freestyle & 50M Freestyle
Jade Klaus: 1st in 25M Backstroke & 2nd in 25M Freestyle
Barnabas LaFlamme: 1st in 100M Freestyle & 2nd in 25M & 50M Backstroke
Harlei Kelliher: 1st in 25M Freestyle & 2nd in 25M Backstroke & 50M Freestyle
Alberto Holz: 1st in 50M Freestyle, 2nd in 25 & 50M Backstroke, 3rd in 35M Freestyle
5-pin bowling:
On Saturday, April 14, 2012, ten Special Olympics~South Okanagan local athletes travelled to Capri Lanes in Kelowna with two coaches. The two team played in a bowling qualifier against teams from Kelowna, Keremeos, Penticton Summerland, Princeton, Kamloops, and Vernon consisting of a total of 56 athletes.
When the last game was completed, the team consisting of Wayne Bierbaum and Bobby Brimacombe (both of Oliver), Maureen Schofield, Alberto Holz, and Angela Flannigan (of Osoyoos) were named as gold medal winners. The competition showed that their scores put the team at 493 pins over average.
In addition, Bobby Brimacombe received a trophy for bowling the highest number over his average in the male category. He won with a 229 POA.
The second team, consisting of Zoli Kovacs, Jack Mullin, Terri Ariel, Stemhen Lee (all of Oliver) and Harlei Kelliher of Osoyoos had a great time and placed ninth. ( Pictured top )
