The Town of Oliver will receive $152,000 from the Ministry of Community, Sport, and Cultural Development’s Community Recreation Program to help fund a project to formalize the Eastside Hike and Bike Trail.
The project will comprise 1.3 kilometers of paved trail, three meters in width with up to three widenings of the greenway to provide resting opportunities for users of the trail. This trail will connect to the existing walkway (bridge) crossings over the Okanagan River at Lion’s Park.
Why this matters:
· The project will increase physical and recreational activities for the community and promote alternate modes of transportation such as walking and cycling which will reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions.
· The Town of Oliver will own all physical improvements along the trail, once an agreement with the Ministry of Forests, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations is in place and will be responsible for the ongoing operational and maintenance of the project.
· These grants will encourage healthy living and community engagement for people of all ages and abilities by providing opportunities for recreational activity.
· Quality recreation infrastructure helps communities attract residents and tourists to communities across B.C.
MLA John Slater says: “Once completed, this project will not only enhance links to the existing regional trail network, but also create a looped connection within the Town of Oliver and rural area.”
Mayor Ron Hovanes says: “The town of Oliver is very appreciative of the Provincial $152,000 grant to enhance our riverside trail system. The hike and bike pathway is actively used and this new section will bring a paved surface to both sides of the Okanagan River. The improvements will be enjoyed for years to come by the entire community.”
