On Saturday March 10, 2012, Mr. Richard Harland (Dick) Bird of Oliver passed away at the McKinney Place Extended Care Unit at the age of 82 years. He was predeceased by his parents Richard and Agnes Bird; three brothers and three sisters. Dick will be fondly remembered by his loving family including wife Beatrice; son Terry (Neena); daughters Cheryl (Darryl) and Lynn (Brian); seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild and extended family. Dick proudly served for twenty years and travelled the world in the Royal Canadian Navy as a Warrant Officer. In Later years he travelled to England and then on to Ireland to see where his family originated from. Dick received the Korea Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, a Canadian Forces Decoration and was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He later worked for Canada Post and as an orchardist. Dick was an elder at St. Paul Lutheran Church and sang in the choir. He also enjoyed travelling and camping in his motorhome as well as spending time with his family playing cribbage, pool and crokinole. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 A.M. Thursday March 15, 2012 at the Oliver Municipal Cemetery. A memorial service will be officiated by Rev. Darren Siegle at 2:00 P.M. at St. Paul Lutheran Church followed by a reception in the church reception hall. Donations are gratefully accepted for McKinney Place ECU or the Alzheimer’s Society.
