This coming Friday January 27th at 7 pm the South Okanagan Secondary Hornets will host their rivals to North the Penticton lakers in the the 46th anniversary battle for the coveted shoe. The game was first started in 1963 when then SOSS coach Jerry Glassford and Pen Hi coach Larry Grant decided to play a non league gam,. Coach Glassford decided they should play for his old sneaker. Two years later former Oliver Wayne Radies donated his size 14 sneaker which was bronzed and now sits atop the coveted trophy. So for the past 46 years many Pen Hi and SOSS greats have put it on the line to win the shoe from the likes of National team players Gord Herbert, Geoff Mckay from Pen Hi to Spencer Mckay and Lazlo Babits (who was a world class javelin thrower for Canada) of SOSS. Over the past 46 years Pen Hi holds the lead in wins as they have won the shoe 26 times to SOSS`s 16 (the shoe was not played only 4 times). The past 7 years have seen the Hornets dominate as they have won the 6 out of the last 7. This year promises to be a great one as both teams seem equally matched; the teams met in the Fulton tournament where the Hornets eked out a 56-51 victory.
As well a brief write up on the Senior Boys Basketball
The Hornets have had a bumpy ride this year as they try to progress to the provincials to defend their title. With a major injury to their key player Greet Gill the Hornets have been only able to win 2 out of the 11 games that he has missed. With Gill in the line up the Hornets are 11-3, all of their losses without Gill (two exceptions) have been decided by 7 or less points, which bodes well for the team when Gill returns to the line up. The Hornets have handily defeated 2 of the top ranked teams in the Province so it is not impossible for them to challenge for the title. It will take a lot of more concentration from the likes of Parm Sidhu, Jivan Gill, Raj Sidhu, Gurkamal Dhaliwal and Amit Chahal if they are going to be able to make a strong run in February. The good signs are players like Bablu Brar, Jaspinder Grewal and Charnpreet Buttar are starting to show signs of success. Overall the Hornets are 13-12 with two third place finishes at the Enver Creek and GW Graham Tournaments, and they are currently 3-0 in league. On Thursday night they host Ok Mission from Kelowna in a league game at 6:45. The shoe game will be played on Friday at 7 pm.
