1. Grade 4 Osoyoos Elementary School student Teagan Adams told the School Board trustees Wednesday that he wants to build a school in Kenya and he is going to the African country with his mother in April to do just that. He and his family have raised about $2200 for the school and challenged the district and other schools to match the effort shown.
2. Final approval given for two major school trips:
A. 45 kids will go to Vancouver with teacher Helen Gallagher February 21-25 for the National Aboriginal Achievement awards taking in the Planetarium, UBC sites and a career fair at the waterfront convention centre.
B. Students from the district’s three secondary schools (Keremeos, Osoyoos and Oliver) will travel to Moscow, Idaho for the Lionel Hampton International Jazz Festival February 23-26.
3. December statistics show enrolment in primary, elementary and secondary down by about 38 students. However the District reports that the U-Learn school population is up by 25 students so the overall loss is pegged at 13.
4. After a number of months of delaying, the School District has adopted a new protocol of recognizing that they meet on the traditional territory of the Okanagan Native Nations.
5. Teacher Mr. Harstone will be taking 25 students from SOSS to the Vancouvver Sun Run April 14-15. This is the third such trip to this running event.
