John Carmichael (Judge) Haynes was the first Collector of Customs at Osoyoos (1861). He married Emily Josephine Pittendrigh.

He had arrived in Victoria from County Cork, Ireland, in 1858 and joined the newly formed B.C. Police force.

His son Valentine Carmichael (Val) Haynes married Elizabeth Runnels and had one daughter Alice Marie.

She married Louis Thompson and settled on the Swan Lake Ranch at Vaseux to raise a family.

Madelon (right) is one daughter of Alice and her child Elizabeth (Liz Curtis) is now a Customs agent at the US/Canada border.
