Last night I read in the Penticton Western that the newspaper had a very active website for comments and like other similar papers would be going to a system of using Facebook identification for any comment. That means you would have to have a FB account and fully identify yourself before a comment would be allowed.
Oliver Daily News has been concerned about comments from unidentified sources and also has been warned about the consequences of such unbridled freedom – with no responsibility of your expressions.
We keep a careful watch, demand real email addresses and eliminate quickly any spam, obnoxious comments or personal remarks. We have also banned a few users from even seeing the site based on certain comments and unbecoming behavior.
All of those people have now been issued a “get out of jail” card and we shall monitor the blog closely.
Our poll this week has one question: Should all comments be identified with the full name of the sender?
Our comment section is one of the main features of the blog that readers seem to enjoy and I do not really want to disturb that chat quality of ODN.
The results of the poll will guide me but I will not change any business policy just because of this type of input. Equally I am not swayed by what I see on these or other polls when it comes to my civic voting.
