The new SOSS is half done and the other half is on the drawing board and students will be asked to contribute to just what happens inside – like lockers, seating, leisure space. Mitch Van Aller says there is still time for community/student involvement as the look of the building inside and out is still evolving. The school board has agreed to a footprint – similiar to the alignment of the old school but dimensions will be different. Van Aller says he is set to meet with the theatre community soon and architects have been asked to rework drawings until the community/school needs are met. The new school will be a modern building and will not reflect the classic look of the older 1948 structure razed by fire September 12. It will contain classroom space, theatre and learning centre and the school board awaits Treasury Board approval to move to the next step. Van Aller says he is now in the final stages of reviewing debris-cleanup bids and soon old concrete foundation, basement and other supports will be trucked away – allowing for a level piece earth to begin construction.
The newest portions of the school will be ready in the summer of 2013. The present building will be open shortly after December 5th. Van Aller says he looks forward to showing off those portions of the building because most of the public never got to see them and students only had occupancy for about a week.
